Sunday, August 29th 2010 A canned tribute to The Goonies Happy 25th Anniversary! The Goonies left an indelible mark on many of us and, as hard as it is to believe, the film celebrated is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. A 25th Anniversary Celebration was recently held in Astoria, Oregon, where much of the filming of the movie was done, but we couldn't attend. Bummer. Since we couldn't make it we decided to give our own tribute to one of our favorite movies and one that brings back great memories of childhood. The Goonies collection, brewed by the fictitious Goondock Brewery, consists of eight regular releases and a special release. They were all previously bottled but Goondock Brewery got with the times and bought a canning line. A good move on their part we thought...and yes this is all made up.
We did our best to choose key moments from the film and to involve all of the main characters when coming up with these beers. Please enjoy and remember, Goonies never say die! These three are the most approachable beers in the collection; "Willy's Gold" which is a Golden Ale, "Pinchers of Peril IPA" an American IPA and "Middle C ESB" an Extra Special Bitter.
These three offerings are a little more complex. "Fettucini MCMLXXI" is an 8.1% barrel-aged porter, "Dad's Business" is an 11.2% barleywine and "Plank Walker Lager" is an oak-aged strong lager.
We saved the best for last! "Hey You Geuze" is a traditional Belgian Geuze that weighs in at 5%, "Truffle Shuffle Stout" is a truffle-infused stout and "Hopperpot" is a special release, hoppy Old Ale that we categorize as an Imperial or Double IPA and which is now a "local legend". Cheers!
