Fascist Pig Ale
(Finch's Beer Company)
Another great can design sitting on shelves these days. Fascist Pig Ale is a hybrid of sorts, it sits somewhere between what is defined as an Imperial Amber/Red Ale, a Rye Beer, and an American Strong Ale. Regardless of what exactly it is, w elove the can and we're excited to pour the contents into a glass and enjoy the hell out of it. Take that fascist pigs!
From the Finch's Beer Company site:
"Fascist Pig is a deep red, malt-forward ale brewed with plenty of caramel malts and a touch of rye for a hint of spice. This big American red ale is brewed and dry-hopped with palisade, an earthy and somewhat floral, mentholated American variety, and Zythos, an American blend that leans strongly toward Amarillo, Simcoe and Cascade varieties."
Here we go...
Pour - dark amber with some ruby highlights and an inch of foam on top. Nice lacing inside the glass.
Aroma - great combination of sweet caramel malts and floral hops. Citrus and fresh cut grass along with some earthiness. Some bready and biscuity aromas along with some slight hints of grainy spiciness.
Taste - definitely a bigger brew than we had expected. Big dose of malt up front with some nice sweet orange citrus flavors and some floral hops. A well-rounded and balanced beer that at 8% is certainly full-flavored. Trying to get some of the rye but it the bitter spiciness it presents is very faint.
Overall - likely to appeal to a variety of style lovers. Big malts but certainly a good amount of hops profiled as well. The ABV isn't too obvious as this is very balanced, smooth, and clean. Great strong amber ale with some complexity.
Note - Finch's Beer Company has recently expanded their distribution considerably. You can now find their products in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Connecticut, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Georgia, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Maryland, DC and soon Virginia!
