10 Badass Craft Beer Can Designs
It never ceases to amaze us how far beer can design has come in so little time and how talented the folks are that design the outfits worn by many of our favorite canned craft beers. When it comes to making a heavy, metal statement with a beer can we've chosen some of our favorites here. Without further ado, this is our all-out ode to general bad-assery when it comes to craft beer can design.
Ozzy does indeed pay homage to Ozzy Osbourne the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness. If you know anything about Ozzy you can probably figure out the bat motif and the tattooed knuckles on the can, which was designed by Mission Media. Inside the can is a 7% Strong Belgian-style Pale Ale that was given the title of "Best Beer in Maryland" in 2012 by The Baltimore Sun.
The Sword Iron Swan Ale
The Sword is a metal band based in Austin, Texas. They teamed up with Real Ale Brewing for Iron Swan, named for a song on their album The Age of Winters, an English-style Pale Ale that comes in at 5.5%. If this beer isn't enough for fans of The Sword, you can also get their "Tears of Fire" hot sauce.
Taster's Choice, a doppelbock brewed with coffee, is a collaboration between two canning brewers, Ska Brewing Company and DC Brau, as well as legendary DC-based ska band The Pietasters. Proceeds from sales of the beer go to benefit a fund that honors Todd Eckhardt, former bassist and songwriter for the Pietasters. For more on that - www.ellingtonschool.org/donate
A collaboration beer between Maui Brewing and Jolly Pumpkin, Sobrehumano Palena'ole is a a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term meaning "superhuman" and "without limits". The design of the can, done by ES Illustration, features a skeleton paddleboarding at night with a volcano in the background. The beer itself was brewed with Hawaiian passion fruit and Michigan cherries.
Devils Tramping Ground Tripel
The devil holding a pitchfork and a glass of beer? Yeah, you got that right. Aviator's Devils Tramping Ground is one of only a handful of Belgian-style Tripels to find the inside of a can and at 9.2% this is a can of beer to be taken seriously. The overall design of this can ranks pretty high when it comes to badassery.
On the Wings of Armageddon Imperial IPA
Hells yes. On the Wings of Armageddon was first brewed by DC Brau to honor the Mayan and Hopi calendars that showed a "transition from one world age to another'' on December 21, 2012. This Imperial IPA clocks in at 9.2% and brewed with a ton of the Falconers Flight™ hop blend. The can design speaks for itself.
Hop Slayer Double IPA
This makes the list simply for having the word "Slayer" in its name. Well, that and the fact that the can design features a skeleton sticking his head out the window of a car that has a license plate that reads "420" and the words "Viva el Lupulo" or "Long Live the Hops" emblazoned on the hood. Awesome.
El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale
Cans of El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale feature the skull of a Spanish conquistador wearing a bloodied helmet. A great design that really draws your attention, but what drew our attention even more is the fact that the design is on a 32 oz. vessel which the brewery is calling "a cannon". Mission is also putting their Shipwrecked Double IPA in these mammoth-sized cans, which are also pretty bad ass.
668 Neighbor of the Beast
Iron Maiden fans should recognize the font used on cans of New England Brewing's aptly named 668 Neighbor of the Beast. This strong Belgian-style Golden Ale is a n excellent brew and the can design is one of our favorites. Wait, speaking of Iron Maiden, have you seen the band's Trooper Ale being produced over in the UK?
Welcome to Hell. Surly's Hell Lager is similar to a Zwickelbier and comes in at a very manageable 5.1% ABV. Along with simply being called "Hell", what makes Surly's beers even more badass is the fact that their head brewer, Todd Haug, is the guitarist in a speed metal outfit called Powermad. After after a bit of a hiatus the band is back at it. You can read an interview with Todd HERE...
