Orange Wheat
(Hangar 24 Craft Brewery)

Southern California's Hangar 24 Craft Brewery recently began canning their Orange Wheat and Helles Lager beers. Around the same time they expanded their distribution to select parts of the northern part of the Golden State. Their Orange Wheat is a special beer as it is brewed with 100% locally grown oranges that are pureed and added during the brewing process. Despite the snow outside here in New England, I'm looking forward to a taste of a warmer climate.

From the Hangar 24 site:

"Crisp, Tangy, and Refreshing. The citrus aroma, light airy mouthfeel, and tangy finish are this unfiltered beer’s trademarks. This is accomplished by adding whole locally grown oranges throughout the brewing process, which perfectly coalesce with the wheat and barley base."

Here we go...

Pour - hazy, light straw or golden in appearance with a half inch or so of snow white head on top.

Aroma - sweet citrus with a definite aroma of oranges combined with a yeasty, zesty, spiciness. Subtle yet aromatic. Smells refreshing, if that is possible.

Taste - one sip of this orange infused wheat beer will make you realize just how easy drinking it is. Light orange flavors combine very well with the tanginess of the wheat and the spicy yeast notes. Clean and extremely smooth. Slightly effervescent on the palate with a very crisp finish.

Overall - an absolute great candidate for year-round drinking in the warmer climes of the US. As for us in the snow-covered areas, this is a beer that has all the flavors of summer. A tangy, citrusy, light-bodied brew that is easy on the palate and very refreshing.

Note - Hangar 24 Craft Brewery takes its name from the location that Master Brewer Ben Cook and his buddies used to meet "after an afternoon of flying to trade stories, talk aviation, play music and share a few cold ones that Ben just finished brewing at home." Many of Hangar 24's labels have aviation-based images and/or names including both of their recently relased cans.
